Liptak - Leenhouts: Legno Duo

back to ensembles

Legno is Italian for wood, the material that creates the resonance of the violin. In contemporary music, the term “col legno” suggests playing with the wooden part of the violin bow rather than with the bow’s hair.

In 2001, violinists Pia Liptak and Margaret Leenhouts created the Legno Duo, combining their individual performance experiences to present the many exciting works that have been written for this venerable instrumental combination. The repertoire spans over centuries representing all stylistic periods. As a versatile core for a variety of ensemble constellations, Legno Duo frequently collaborates with other string players and keyboardists to increase the scope and flexibility of its repertoire. Pia and Margaret performs as the Legno Duo in both concert and educational settings.

Margaret Leenhouts

Margaret earned a doctorate in violin performance and literature at the Eastman School of Music in 1993 and her musical studies also included work at the Mannes College of Music and the Juilliard School with world-renowned violin pedagogue, Dorothy DeLay. Margaret has been a member of the Eos and Evergreen String Quartets and is currently part of Rochester Philharmonic String Quintet. She has performed chamber works at the British Arts Center of Yale, the Eastern Music Festival and the Virtuosi Series at the Eastman School of Music. In addition to her solo and chamber music work, Dr. Leenhouts has been a member of the New Haven, Grand Rapids and Honolulu Symphony Orchestras and has been on the faculties of Hope College and Mansfield University, and the Eastman Community Music School.
